Mad Men recaps

"The Suitcase" | Mad Men | TV Club | TV | The A.V. Club:
"Over your life, you will become many different people, and the journey from one person to another is one of discovery and excitement. But there are also moments and places where you'll long to return, memories you'll wish to fold up and place in a bag next to each other. And then someday, you'll find yourself no longer who you were, really, and that bag of what you wished to hold on to will be all you have left. And you, too, will head off into the unknown."
Mad Men recaps are the best part of my Mondays. The A.V. Club's is usually very good; Slant Magazine's blog The House Next Door also puts out a good one, but usually a little later in the week. NYMag's is a crapshoot; this week it was just crap. I couldn't help myself and skimmed it before I had seen the episode and freaked out when I read the commentary (SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!) about Don and Peggy beginning a romantic relationship. I think they were way off the mark and thank god for that. D/P sex would not only cheapen their friendship...it's also fucking weird.

Sidenote - stumbled on this Sad Don Draper meme before watching the episode tonight and as a result started cracking up when Don Draper burst into tears. Damn you internet. You have to admit this one is pretty damn amazing though.

In California

1:52 - 2:57 is magical.

I am native to it, but I'm overgrown
I am choked
My roots on the earth, as rich as roe
Here, down in California

I gotta say I like her new voice; her little-girl crooning from before was a little freaky. But now I feel bad because apparently the change happened because of "vocal chord nodules" (wtf moment).

"'It’s a very difficult city to read,' Mr. Lopez said, owing largely to the local distaste for ostentation and hype, a suspicion of anything that requires a high-degree of difficulty to pull off and that people spend a lot of their lives in cars."

Not so sure about the whole athleticism thing being distinctly San Franciscan, but otherwise this article is pretty spot-on about all the things I love about this city. It's hard not to be seduced by the everyday style of New York City, where regardless of the day, time, or place, people on the street strut about like they just walked off the cover of a magazine. When I was there for a few short days this summer, I was enthralled by the glamour - partly because it seems so unattainable - but when it comes down to it, San Francisco is where my closet and my heart belong. Now someone give me a plaid shirt and a Mission burrito.
